Happy Hour with History: Organizing Oil

Thursday, February 20, 6 p.m.

Hermosa Beach Museum, 710 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach

In the early 1970s, Roy Stinnet purchased four oil wells in Hermosa Beach just a year before oil prices increased tenfold. The Fire Department subsequently shut his operations down due to a leak at one of his sites. From debates over the first ban on oil drilling in 1932 to the “Measure ‘O’” vote in 2015, grassroots community organizations, strong personalities, and backdoor dealings have driven decisions around oil in Hermosa. To hear these stories and explore the Hermosa Beach Museum’s oil history exhibit join presenters Mark Shoemaker and Ryan Basford. Light refreshments. $5 admission. Register online HermosaBeachHistoricalSociety.org.
