Lionsgate has promoted Joel Meyer to executive vp, worldwide production for Lionsgate Television, replacing studio veteran Gary Goodman as he retires.
Meyer will head up production for the studio’s premium scripted series slate, while overseeing Lionsgate’s East Coast TV production facilities in Atlanta, Yonkers, New York and Newark, New Jersey. He succeeds Goodman, an 18-year veteran at the studio.
Meyer’s promotion comes as the Lionsgate Television Group has a production slate that includes ABC’s The Rookie, a Rookie spinoff in the works from series creator Alexi Hawley, and an adaptation of the John Grisham bestseller The Rainmaker for USA Network. Other TV series in production include the reimagining of the classic Robin Hood tale for MGM+ and multiple Power Universe shows for Starz.
“We’re pleased to promote Joel Meyer, a talented executive from within our ranks. He has led the charge on many key series while navigating the pandemic and the strikes, and his leadership and dedication will be critical to moving our Television Group forward,” Lionsgate Television Group chair and chief creative officer Kevin Beggs and vice chairman Sandra Stern said in a joint statement. “We are grateful for Gary Goodman’s nearly 20 years of outstanding service to Lionsgate, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
During his tenure as head of TV production, Goodman had a hand in popular series like Mad Men, Orange is the New Black, Weeds, Nurse Jackie and Nashville. He spearheaded production for the Power franchise, BMF, P-Valley, The Serpent Queen for Starz, The Studio, Mythic Quest and Acapulco for Apple TV+ and the John Wick prequel, The Continental for Peacock and Amazon Prime.
For Meyer, who came to Lionsgate after a stint as a producer for ABC Family, there’s upcoming series to oversee like the Seth Rogen comedy The Studio for Apple TV+, Spartacus: House of Ashur for Starz, and the Twilight TV series Midnight Sun from Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer for Netflix.
