Martin Short Reacts to Surprise SAG Awards Win: ‘I Guess I’m Beloved’

At the SAG Awards last month, two of the night‘s biggest surprises came when Martin Short took home best actor in a comedy series, as well as comedy ensemble for the cast of Only Murders in the Building.

On Amy Poehler‘s new podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Short looked back on missing the big night after he came down with COVID from the SNL 50 anniversary special days before — as the pair noted Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Colin Jost, Amy Schumer, Meryl Streep and Mike Myers also caught the virus at the event.

Poehler remarked how Short has been nominated for the show several times and not won, as Short emphasized, “I never win! I wasn’t even watching, I was watching The Brutalist,” joking it’s his nightly routine before bed. “Then someone said turn it on and I was stunned. That’s what Selena Gomez said, ‘We always lose.’”

“In this experience of Only Murders in the Building — we’re starting our fifth season — absolutely never had a consideration. Not remotely,” the star added of the possibility of winning awards for the show. “The publicist sends you things, ‘SAG Predictions,’ and it was always like, ‘Well if it isn’t Jeremy Allen White, I’ll tell you it will be Jason Segel.’ It was not even close.”

When Poehler asked Short how he thought he won, then, he teased, “I guess I’m beloved. I’ve become this stupid icon.”

On a more serious note he added, “It would have been thrilling to be there but I do find that stuff [stressful] of you have to get up and did you forget a name and then if you pull out a piece of paper you’re a wimp and you don’t have any soul,” joking, “I saw Timothée Chalamet just speak. What I’m going to do next time if I ever win again is I’m going to get up there and lower the mic so that I can lean down to it like he did. It’s a power move.”

Short beat out Adam Brody, Ted Danson, Harrison Ford and White in the comedy actor category before Only Murders won for best ensemble in a comedy series, which was accepted by a shocked Gomez. She later hand-delivered Short and Steve Martin’s trophies to set as the group worked on filming season five.
