Talk about a fitting plot for the movie that’s winning what appears to be the slowest moviegoing weekend of 2025 so far at the domestic box office, as well as one of the worst in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era.
Paramont’s action-comedy Novocaine easily topped the domestic chart this weekend, opening to $8.7 million and it had no trouble icing out Mickey 17, now in its second weekend. However, it was hoped that the Paramount pic would do $10 million. The movie stars Jack Quaid as a new kind of action hero who is not so great at dishing it out, but boy, can he take it — thanks to his genetics, which make him feel no harm.
Duking it out for No. 2 is Steven Soderbergh‘s new movie Black Bag and Warner Bros.’ ill-fated Mickey 17 with around $7.5 million each. The latter tumbled more roughly 60 percent.
It’s hardly normal to see a weekend where not one pic crosses $10 million, resulting in overall domestic revenue coming in at an estimated $54.7 million. Until now, 2025 Super Bowl weekend revenue was worse, or $55.8 million.
Marvel holdover Captain America: Brave New World remained high up on the chart in its fifth weekend, coming in No. 4 with $5.5 million for a North American tally of nearly $190 million. The Mouse House notched another milestone this weekend when becoming the first studio of 2025 to see its film’s amass more than $1 billion in ticket sales.
Back to the hodgepodge of new films. A Looney Tunes Movie: The Day the Earth Stood Still opened to $3.2 million to round out the top five domestically, while indie faith-leaning pic The Last Supper followed with $2.8 million.
To say exhibitors aren’t counting the days until Disney’s spring live-action event pic Snow White opens in an understatement, followed by A Minecraft Movie. Both are tracking to do solid business, with Snow White alone looking at a $50 million to $56 million domestic launch next weekend.
