Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K returns to waterfront
The annual Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce Super Bowl Sunday 10 K/5K Run/Walk returns Feb. 9, starting and finishing on Harbor Drive at the Redondo Beach waterfront.
The 10k race begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:15. Other races include the Kids 1K Fun Run, 5K stroller walk, and 10K baby buggy run.
All told, 8,000 participants are expected. The morning includes a costume contest and awards for top finishers. Race registration begins at 6 a.m., with day-of sign-ups available. Cost for a 10k/5k adult is $63.79.
League of Women Voters mayoral forum Feb. 13
The Redondo Beach League of Women Voters will host a mayoral forum Thursday, Feb. 13 from 5 – 7 p.m. All five candidates have confirmed they will attend, including, in alphabetical order, Georgette Gantner, Jeff Ginsburg, Joan Irvine, Jim Light and Nils Nehrenheim.
Sandbags available for low-lying houses
The predicted rainfall for Thursday and Friday means Redondo Beach residents living in low-lying areas prone to flooding may pick up sandbags at the City Yard, Dominguez Park, Anderson Park and Wilderness Park.
Residents need to show ID. and may get 10 bags maximum. It is against the law to collect sand from the beach.
Community Giving Garden first harvest to go to St. James’ program
The Redondo Beach Community Giving Garden has announced its first harvest of 2025 was donated to the St. James Catholic Church “Feed the Needy” program. Its director, Linda Cabibbo, and volunteer cooking staff feed almost 80 people three times per week.
The Jan. 15 delivery was five pounds of produce; lettuce, swiss chard, tomatoes and celery. Since July of last year, the Giving Garden has brought from 5-8 pounds each month.
The Community Giving Garden is part of the Redondo Beach Community Garden, which opened in 2023 at the edge of Alta Vista Park.
Parkland Conservancy Nature Walks series starts
South Bay Parkland Conservancy will hold “Nature Walks in Hopkins Wilderness Park” Sunday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. for kids in second through fifth grade and 11:15 a.m. for all ages.
The hour-long walks are designed as a sensory experience directed toward kids. Topics include birds, pollinators, color exploration and plant reproduction.
The schedule for the Conservancy’s second-to-fifth grade walks is as follows: Feb. 9 – plant identification; March 9 – birds; and April 19 – Earth Day nature. ER
