Tate McRae Earns First No. 1 Album in U.S. With ‘So Close To What’

Tate McRae topped the Billboard 200 on Sunday, earning the pop star her first No. 1 album in the U.S.

The 21-year-old Canadian singer released her third studio album, So Close to What, on Feb. 21, featuring singles “Revolving Door,” “It’s OK I’m OK” and “Sports Car.” McRae performed the latter and another song from the album, “Dear God,” last week on Saturday Night Live.

So Close to What earned 177,000 equivalent album units and the biggest debut week for studio album by a female artist since Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet, according to Billboard.

McRae brought legions of fans to the Kia Forum last month for an album release event. The singer took over the parking lot of the Inglewood arena for a jam-packed event featuring photo ops, outfit displays, food trucks and freebie booths from American Express, Adidas and Neutrogena, the latter as sponsors of the event.

Fans, many dressed in McRae-inspired ensembles of hotpants and a jersey, had to request a chance to purchase tickets for $8 through Ticketmaster. All ticket revenue is donated to FireAid to support L.A. wildfire relief efforts. The event was also streamed on TikTok for those who couldn’t be in person.

McRae performed several songs off So Close to What during the fan event, some for the first time, such as “Dear God,” “bloodonmyhands” and “Revolving Door.” The singer said that the album’s main concept was falling in love again, seemingly a nod to her relationship with rapper The Kid LAROI, who is featured on the album.

The singer is preparing to head out on her 82-date “Miss Possessive” tour, kicking off in Mexico City on March 18. She will head to stops around the world including São Paulo, London, Amsterdam, Prague and New York before ending at the L.A.’s Kia Forum in November. More details about McRae’s tour can be found on her website.
